I’ve been known for a variety of things:

  • Busting a move at random.
  • Lifter of heavy things.
  • A ninja strength coach.

I’ve worked with a wide variety of people, ranging from helping grandmas achieve independence in their lives, to making kids laugh and forget that they are “working out”, to teaching high school athletes values and watching them grow, to helping professional athletes maintain their body and prevent them from getting injured.

Growing up, I’ve played a majority of the sports that I’m supposed to play. And I’ve learned just how bad I am at almost all of them.

  • When I was 12 years old, playing the outfield in baseball, I was fielding a routine groundball, and it subsequently hit a lip in the grass, and likewise – hit me in the lip. I had braces on at the time.
    Crying ensued.
  • Basketball didn’t really work out for me when I had to wear one of those goggles because I was too young to wear contacts. Try catching a pass where you have to move your whole head (read: I had a big head.) in order to see the ball before it gets to you.
  • I was pretty good at running around in soccer. And that was about it.

For the most part of my life, I was hellish-ly uncoordinated as well. This is clearly outlined by my 7-figure deal in professional sports. So what did any self-proclaimed athletic prodigy do when they couldn’t find the sport to match their raw talent?

  • Started trading and battling Pokémon cards (I actually got in the Top 25% of the best of the East Coast of my age group. Totally bragging.)
  • Picked up Warcraft III and World of Warcraft.
  • Played Halo like a boss.

Somewhere between the time where I was playing video games non-stop, and developing the posture of a 90 year old grandmother because of that very issue, I decided enough was enough: no amount of pizza and soda will stop my conquest in becoming an awesome version of myself.

So yes, where I lacked in coordination and keeping up with my friends athletically, I made up for in stubbornness and good ol’ hard work, in the best way possible.

So this proved itself in more than one way: I gained more than 20lbs in less than 8 weeksI can lift more than 2.75x my bodyweight, and I can confidently say I can do a handstand push-up on command at any given time of day.

I read books. I listened to what smarter people had to say about strength and fitness topics. I began to find the similarities that make meatheads, athletes, and scientists alike so successful, as opposed to the minutia that separates them.

So my purpose here is not to boast about my amazing athleticism, but rather point out the fact that without a teacher or guide, at times the road may be difficult and tough to tackle.

So feel free to stick around and catch up on my late night musings on fitness and athleticism topics (they happen often, as I tend to think better at night), awesome YouTube videos, and other tidbits of knowledge.
